About Us
Working at the intersection of sexual and human rights.
Established in February 2003, The Woodhull Freedom Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization devoted to education and public advocacy to achieve recognition of our fundamental human right to sexual freedom. The Foundation offices are located in Washington, DC, and we work in partnership with activists, advocacy organizations and coalitions across the United States fighting the political, social and economic forces driving and expanding sexual repression.
Sexual freedom is defined as the fundamental human right of all individuals to develop and express their unique sexuality. Encompassed within the sexual freedom movement are:
- Gender and gender identity
- Sexual orientation
- Consensual, non-exploitative sexual expression of one’s choice
- Relationships that extend from all of the foregoing and the rights bestowed upon those relationships
- Comprehensive sexuality education throughout the lifespan,
- Sexual and reproductive health/choice/justice.
Building on the affirmations of individual rights contained in the United States Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, and on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Woodhull affirms sexual freedom as a fundamental human right. We believe that broad recognition of sexual freedom will lead to a healthier, more humane society and will liberate individual and group energies to create a more just, compassionate and sustainable world. For this reason, Woodhull, while highlighting the benefits of a shared sexual freedom, human rights agenda works to foster collaborative activities that honor individual advocacies and communities, designs creative initiatives to develop broad public support for sexual freedom, and works to transform these initiatives into public policy.
Woodhull carefully cultivates and works to engage allies from all social, economic, religious* and cultural justice communities interested in affirming sexual freedom. We strive to harness the energy of and join with the LGBT, women’s liberation, comprehensive sex education, polyamory, and related movements to bring existing energy to bear on sexual freedom as an additional opportunity for shared discourse and political, cultural and social change.
